You want your teeth to stay strong and healthy. You brush, you floss, you even go to the dentist twice a year for an exam and cleaning. Isn't that enough?

There's no such thing as a "routine" visit at Dr. Tad Lovan's office. We take regular cleanings and check-ups very seriously and encourage some of our patients to schedule them three times a year!

That might sound surprising to you when you've been raised on only twice-a-year dental checkups. That made sense when traditional dental X-rays were the only diagnostic technology available. Now we have amazing new technology that lets us examine your teeth in much greater detail than was possible before. We can catch potential problems such as decay or gum disease much earlier, and treat minor problems before they become major conditions that can compromise not only your oral health but your overall health as well.

We're learning more all the time about relationships between dental and general health. Gum disease has been found to be a contributing factor in such conditions as cardiovascular disease; lung, kidney and pancreatic cancers; type II diabetes; Alzheimer's disease; strokes and pre-term or low birth weight babies. For these reasons, we chose to incorporate the use of ultrasonic scalers. This comfortable cleaning tool allows us to manage periodontal (gum) disease far better then with the use of traditional hand scalers, Why? Ultrasonic cleaning actually tears down, or bursts, the bacterial membranes living in the pockets of your gum tissue. As you know, poor health also diminishes your immune system, making you less resistant to other infections. Knowing this, you'll understand why we strongly encourage regular visits and proper at-home care.

One of the most innovative tools we use today is DIAGNOdent, a tool that uses a laser diode to inspect below the surfaces of your teeth. This amazing technology lets us catch decay earlier and more precisely than other detection procedures, key factors in carrying out our philosophy of conservative treatment.

DIAGNOdent is a major breakthrough for many reasons: it is absolutely patient friendly and painless with it's pen-like probe that glides gently over the surfaces of the teeth: it locates the kind of decay that destroys teeth from the inside out and allows us to treat decay in its earliest stages. Stopping it before major drilling and other invasive restorative techniques are required.

You'll be delighted by the difference DIAGNOdent makes in the life of your teeth.

Digital X-Rays:

High Tech, High Resolution!

The use of digital x-rays is relatively recent. Even today only 10% of dentists (at most) use them. Digital x-rays cost the same as older style x-rays and are covered by insurances. With digital x-rays we can get a much better picture of the health of your teeth and supporting bone structures than we ever could before. And with computers in the treatment rooms, you can see them right along with us. By letting us detect any decay much earlier, we can use smaller restorations which help save your teeth and save money too!
